阅读下列短文,从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的选项中选出一个最佳答案。

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage. Punctuality (准时,守时) is important in American business, academic, and social settings. The importance of punctuality is taught to young children in school. Tardy slips and the use of bells signal to the child that punctuality and time itself are to be respected.

People who keep appointments are considered dependable. If people are late for job interviews, appointments, or classes, they are often viewed as unreliable and irresponsible. In the business world, “time is money” and companies may fine their

executives for tardiness to business meetings. Of course, it is not always possible to be punctual. Social and business custom also provides rules for late arrivals. Calling on the telephone if one is going to be more than a few minutes late for scheduled appointments is considered polite and is often expected. Keeping a date of a friend waiting beyond ten to

twenty minutes is considered rude. On the other hand, thirty minutes late for some parties is acceptable.

Respecting deadlines is also important in academic and professional circles. It is expected that deadlines for class assignments or business reports will be met. Students who hand in assignments late may be surprised to find that the professor will lower their grades or even refuse to grade their work. Whether it is a question of arriving on time or of meeting a deadline, people are culturally conditioned to regulate time.

Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage. Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answers to both these questions are yes. To some extent our intelligence is given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person’s intelligence are fixed a t birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view,

now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.

It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. When people have close blood relationship, they are likely to be close in intelligence. Therefore if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degrees of intelligence will be completely different. If on the other hand we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relatives like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.

Imagine that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence development. And this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all, are likely to have a similar degrees of intelligence.

41. According to the passage, a child .

A. born with low intelligence will become a genius through special education

B. born with low intelligence will never become a genius C. living in rich and varied surroundings will develop his intelligence beyond the limits fixed at birth

D. living in a boring situation will not develop his intelligence at all

42. As far as intelligence is concerned, most experts now believe that .

A. neither birth nor environment really matters

B. birth is more important than environment

C. environment plays a more important role than birth D. birth and environment are both important

43. To show that intelligence is related to blood relationship, we may .

A. respectively examine the intelligence of two identical twins as well as that of two unrelated people taken at random, and then compare the results

B. have two identical twins’ blood tested, and then compare the results

C. have two unrelated people’s blood tested, and then compare the results

D. respectively examine the blood of brothers and sisters as well as that of parents and children, and then compare the results

44. Which of the following groups of people are likely to have similar degrees of intelligence?

A. People who are raised and educated in different environments

B. People who live in close contact C. People who are closely related D. Both B and C

45. The author’s purpose of writing this passage is . A. to emphasize the importance of environment in intelligence development

VI. Translation from English into Chinese (共10 分) 请将下列短文译成汉语并将答案写在答题卡上。

Most of us know about the phases of life which we label to parallel different age groups and life stages: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. We think of infancy before childhood and middle age before old age, with each unique phase bringing its own peculiar set of challenges. These challenges

can be overcome by acquainting ourselves with them, such as the child’s need to learn, the adult’s need to find the right career and build a family, and the senior’s need for support and good health care.

Interestingly, ideas about the stages of life are changing. In previous times, people didn’t have a solid idea of childhood as being separate from adulthood. A hundred years ago, no one thought of adolescence. Until recently it was understood as a norm that their induction to adulthood was completed as soon as they graduated from college. They would now find a sensible job which would lead to a career. Then during this career they would start a family, ideally before they turned 30.
